FAQ

Find answers to frequently asked questions quickly and easily.

How is DocStory different from other products?

DocStory is a whitelist-based solution. It blocks unauthorized processes that are not on the whitelist from accessing data before anything happens, so it stops not only ransomware but any malicious action, including data leakage, deletion, tampering and forgery.

Whitelist solutions are known for the hassle of registering countless processes one by one. Has that been solved?

Windows processes and processes with a valid digital signature are whitelisted automatically by the engine, so most processes used on a PC never need to be registered. Only the few processes that pose a security risk have to be managed. We have cut the heavy management load, the main drawback of whitelist solutions, by more than 90%.

How can the agent be installed?

Users can download the installer in a browser and install it manually. If needed, the agent can also be installed silently (stealth installation, without user interaction) through a patch management system (PMS) or similar tools.

Does the agent slow down the PC?

In normal operation the agent uses 0% CPU and no more than 5 MB of memory. Installing the agent does not degrade PC performance.

Can many agents connecting at once overload the network?

Each PC uses only 52 bytes per minute, so the network is not overloaded during operation.

Will the agent cause existing software to malfunction or conflict with it?

DocStory has been running for years at more than 30 government agencies and companies with no malfunctions or conflicts.

Can the agent be protected against removal?

Yes. The agent can be set so that it can only be removed with administrator approval. It can also be set so that users can remove it freely under administrator control.

Is the agent process protected against forced termination?

Yes. The agent process is protected against forced termination. Even if it is terminated for some reason, it restarts immediately and keeps protecting the PC.

Are users alerted when ransomware or malware is blocked?

Yes. Users and administrators are notified immediately with a pop-up.

Can exceptions be made for unauthorized processes that are not on the whitelist?

Yes. Administrators can grant exceptions for unauthorized processes.

Who adds processes to the whitelist, users or administrators?

Only administrators can add them. Once added, a process is applied to the agents as whitelisted right away. With AI auto-classification turned on, blocked programs that the AI judges to be safe are added automatically (administrators can turn this off).

How is the agent updated?

Updates are delivered automatically through the admin page. As soon as an update file is uploaded to the admin page, the agents are updated.

Can it run on a closed (air-gapped) network?

Yes. As a whitelist-based solution, it needs no signature updates and therefore no connection to external servers. It is optimized for closed networks and runs on internet-connected networks as well.

Does protection continue if the management server fails?

Yes. If the management server goes down, the agents keep running with the last policy they received, so protection stays in place.
